Target Return Policy

Target Return Policy – On The Mark!

You like details? The Target return policy has them, but basically most items that are still in new condition and returned within 90 days will receive a refund or exchange. Items bought from Target.com will have 90 days from the day the item was invoiced.

If you’ve ordered something from Target.com the invoicing happens when your item is made ready for pickup or is shipped. Some items have modified return policies, so please read the receipts, packing slips, and statements, in addition to the item description.

Items that are opened or damaged may be denied a refund or exchange.

How to return items purchased from a Target store

To return items at a Target store go to the Guest Services section and a team member will help you process your return. In addition to the item that you’ll be returning also include one of the following items:

  • Valid receipt
  • Return barcode
  • Payment method used to purchase your item
  • If you don’t have any of the items above a Target Team Member could attempt to do a receipt lookup for you.

The return must comply with Target’s Return Policy

How to return an item that was bought from Target.com’s website

First, your return must comply with Target’s return policy.

Return in-store: You may replace or return the item in store if you bring it and an ID with you to Guest Services. In addition to the item being returning you must also bring one of the following items:

  • Valid receipt
  • Return barcode (You should be able to see the return barcode when your order has left the warehouse, delivered by a Shipt shopper or picked up).
  • The payment method used to purchase the item (If you don’t have any of the items in this list the store could attempt to do a receipt lookup for you).

Starting a return online: Target offers a way for you to start processing returns and replacements online or through the Target app. Follow the steps below to get started:

  1. Access your account via Target.com or the Target app.
  2. Select “Online” from a toggle at the top of the page to view your order(s).
  3. Your item will be listed under “Purchases” if using the Target app, and under “Orders” if using Target.com website.
  4. Now, choose either:
    • Return option (choose this option if you are returning your item directly to the store or sending back via mail).
    • Fix an issue (choose this option if you need help with missing or damaged items).
  5. Click through the prompts to finish your refund/replacement request, or access your return barcode to use for returning items to the store.
    • Replacement requests are subject to item availability and are treated as an equal exchange. Customers requesting a replacement will not incur additional charges. Replacement requests started online will be cancelled if returned to the store.
    • Refunds are issued back to the payment method used for the original purchase. Items purchased with PayPal will be issued a refund to a Target GiftCard, and instructions will be provided to you on what to do with your item(s).
    • If you need to return your order via mail, Target will give you a free return shipping label and email the instructions to you. This information can be found on your order details’ page. Make sure to include the following: item(s) purchased, the packaging the item(s) came in, and also any accessories. If you return the wrong item and we’ve already refunded you, Target could possibly recharge you for the original purchase amount. So, make sure to return the correct item(s)! Place and secure the return label on the exterior of the package. Mail your package back. We recommend using an authorized UPS location. You can find a location here: http://ups.com/dropoff. If you are returning a product back to a store make sure to bring the return barcode as well. Give the barcode to a team member at Guest Services and she or he will get your return started.

Can a Target GiftCard be returned?

Target GiftCards can’t be returned for purchases made on or after October 1, 2020. Additionally, GiftCards cannot be redeemed for cash or credit except where required by law. You can’t redeem your Target gift card for cash or credit. Physical cards that are unused can be returned to any Target store.

How will I get my refund?

Payment Process: Typically, a refund will be returned to the original form of payment. However, if you used a variety of payment methods, it can return all refunds to the different forms of money used. If you don’t have the original receipt or return barcode, you may get a merch card as an alternative to a refund to your original method of payment. If you purchase an item online using either PayPal or a Target GiftCard, that is eligible for a return, and you are issued a refund, you may receive the refund on a new Target GiftCard.

If you have lost the card your refund is going back to, you will have to contact your card issuer for information about your refund.

Timeframe: Refunds going back to a Target RedCard usually take up to 2 days after approval to be processed. Target typically processes refunds back to third party card companies within 5 days after the refund has been approved. When you return an item to our Online Return Center it needs to be inspected first and then process the return. So, once the Online Return Center gets a returned item it can take an average of 7-10 additional business days before it gets approved for a refund.

How to return or exchange an item without a receipt?

Target offers different options when returning items, and try their best to make sure you have proof of purchase for your items.

Target customers can access their return barcodes and receipts through their Target accounts, either if they have made an order online or if they have paid in store with a card associated to their Target account.

If you need help locating your order, please go to the email confirmation and look for the barcode. You can also check Target accounts and the Target app for any barcodes related to a purchase.

Bring the item and payment method used to Guest Services within the return window allowed for that item, and a team member will try to find the receipt for the store and online purchases as well. A team member at Guest Services can locate purchase receipts for the listed payment methods below:

  • Target RedCard™ (Target Debit Card™, Target Credit Card™, Target™ Mastercard®)

Target Plus Partners receipts are emailed when the order is shipped, and also when the order is delivered. Receipts are also available by accessing your order details page and can be printed. How to return an item received as a gift

Items received as a gift can be returned to a Target store using a receipt or packing slip. A refund will be issued to a Target GiftCard. If a merchandise return card was used to pay for any portion of the sales transaction, that portion of the refund will be credited back to the merchandise return card. In store returns using a gift receipt need to wait until the next day to return the gift. You may still receive a merchandise return card in store if you don’t have either the gift receipt or packing slip.

Items purchased from Target.com can also be returned by mail with the packing slip or gift receipt. Contact Target Guest Services at 800-591-3869 if you wish to return your gift by mail. If you don’t have your gift’s packing slip contact Target’s Guest Services for further assistance in processing your return.

Target Plus Partners’ returns require you to present either the receipt or original payment method to look up the receipt. Target Plus Partners’ receipts are emailed when the order is shipped, and also when the order is delivered. Receipts can be found and printed from the order details page. Items purchased from our Partners can be returned to a Target store or mailed.  Our Partners’ gift returns will be refunded using a physical or electronic Target GiftCard sent via mail or email.

How are large items returned to Target?

Most large items can be returned to a Target store for a refund without a stocking fee. Large furniture or electronics might be eligible for return pickup.  Contact Target.com Guest Services at 800-591-3869 to find out if you’re eligible for this return pickup service.

Items slated for return need to be disassembled, put back into packaging and brought back to the same point of deliver for the carrier to pick up. Return pickups operate during the carrier’s normal business hours with an eight hour pickup window. Be sure to include the item’s packing slip to expedite your refund. You can still return your item to our return center if you don’t have your packing slip. The return pickup service is only available for large and heavy items exceeding a weight of 150 pounds.

Unless you selected To-the-Door delivery, a signature by a person who is at least 18 years of age will be required to receive the package.

Will I get a refund for an item purchased as part of a BOGO promotion?

Buy One Get One (BOGO) promotion purchase refunds are based on the lowest priced item, then applied to each item proportionately. Returning any of the items means your refund will be reduced to the discounted amount for each item.

For example: BOGO: The first item is $60 and the second item is $40. The $60 item will be discounted by $24 and the $40 item will be discounted by $16, which equals to a total discount of $40. If either item is returned, the return value will be equal to the original purchase price reduced by its prorated discount.
